• Weapons possession card (green) for the purchase of firearms (handguns / multi-loader long guns)

• Permission to purchase ammunition: Authorization through entry in the gun ownership card

Their reliability is generally checked by the competent authority. Proof of firearms expertise and proof of need must be provided by the applicant and submitted with the application.

The following documents are required when applying:

• Identity card or passport and
• Sport shooters:
  Proof of need by means of a certificate from the recognized shooting sports association or a sub-association affiliated to it that the applicant has been regularly practising shooting sports in a club as a sports shooter for at least twelve months and that the weapon is approved and required for a sports discipline in accordance with the sports regulations.
• Hunter:
  Valid hunting license or certificate of successful completion of the hunting examination
• Heirs:
  Certificate of inheritance, will, declaration of renunciation from other heirs if applicable.
• Gun collector:
  Weapons expertise
  Proof of need in the form of proof of the cultural-historical significance of the requested collection area by means of an expert opinion from a recognized weapons expert.

An amendment to the Weapons Act for heirs of weapons requiring a license came into force on 01.04.2008:

According to this, heirs who cannot claim a need under firearms law (e.g. as a hunter or sport shooter) for the inherited weapons must secure the weapons with a blocking system. Depending on the number of weapons, this will result in not inconsiderable costs for the holder of a gun ownership card for heirs.
