Formal proof of German citizenship is provided by a certificate of citizenship. This certificate is required for certain legal transactions or legal relationships (e.g., adoption, appointment as a civil servant).

Requirements:
Before issuing a certificate of citizenship or a certificate confirming legal status as a German citizen, the citizenship authority must verify:

• whether and by what means you acquired German citizenship or the legal status of a German national,
• whether and by what means you may have lost German citizenship or your legal status as a German.

In addition to your personal information, information is also required about the individuals from whom you derive your citizenship. You can find out who these individuals are on the application form.
