Volkshochschulen (Volkshochschulen) are public institutions for adult education at the local level.

Volkshochschulen operate under a public mandate and are not subject to ideological or commercial interests. As an independent part of the education system, they collaborate with a wide variety of organizations to align the content of their programs with the goals of adult education and, in this sense, make a significant contribution to the social, intellectual, and cultural development of citizens.
