When you change your place of residence—for example, due to a move—you are registering a new place of residence.

If you move within Germany to a new municipality, joint municipality, or city, you must register with the appropriate office at your new place of residence. The office at your new place of residence will then notify the previously responsible office. Your previous registration will be automatically canceled there.

You must report a move within the municipality, joint municipality, or city—or a change of residence within the same building—to the appropriate office within two weeks.

Please fulfill your registration obligation to avoid unnecessary problems and hassle. Failure to comply with this obligation can lead to issues, for example, with vehicle registration, obtaining a driver’s license, or applying for a certificate of good conduct.
In addition, your ID card and, if applicable, your vehicle registration must be updated.
