The new Federal Registration Act takes effect on November 1, 2015.

Anyone who moves into an apartment must register with the appropriate authority within two weeks.

Be sure to comply with your registration requirement to avoid unnecessary problems and hassle. Failure to comply with this requirement can lead to problems, for example, with vehicle registration, obtaining a driver’s license, or applying for a certificate of good conduct.

In addition, your ID card and, if applicable, your vehicle registration certificate will need to be updated.

• Identity card and/or passport as proof of identity and for changing the apartment details
• Confirmation from the landlord
• The following data and documents are also required for
• persons moving in from abroad:
• the last residential address in Germany (registration confirmation, date of moving in and out)
• persons under guardianship:
• written power of attorney or guardian's identity card

There are no fees. Late notifications that exceed the notification period of 2 weeks may be subject to a fine.

Registration must take place within 2 weeks of moving into the apartment.

Registrations are usually processed immediately. You will receive confirmation of your registration free of charge.
