The online ID function (electronic proof of identity) enables secure digital identification.

The chip in your ID card contains the following data in particular:

• Last name,
• birth name,
• first names,
• Doctoral degree,
• Date of birth,
• Place of birth,
• Address,
• unique municipality code used in the official municipal directory,
• Abbreviation for nationality,
• Document type,
• Last day of validity,
• service- and card-specific identifier,
• Abbreviation “D” for the Federal Republic of Germany,
• Indication of whether a specific age has been reached or not yet reached,
• indication of whether a place of residence matches the queried place of residence, and
• Order name, stage name.

Activation

When your ID card is issued, you will receive a PIN letter containing a five-digit temporary PIN. To use the online ID function, you must replace this with a six-digit PIN of your own choosing the first time you use it.

If the function has not been activated, it can be enabled at any time during the ID card’s validity period by contacting the responsible ID card authority.

Change or Reset Your PIN

You can change your PIN at any time via the AusweisApp or at the ID card office. A new PIN is required if you have forgotten it, if the PIN has been locked after multiple incorrect entries, or if it has become known to unauthorized persons.

Changes to Personal Information

Changes to your name or other personal data are generally taken into account when a new ID card is issued.

Address changes are updated as part of the registration or change-of-address process; a new ID card is not required for this.

Blocking in Case of Loss or Theft

If your ID card is lost or stolen, you should immediately have the online ID function blocked through the ID card authority or the blocking hotline. This prevents unauthorized use. To block the card via the hotline, you’ll need the personal blocking password from your PIN letter.

The electronic signature is a separate function and, if necessary, must also be blocked with the respective certificate provider in the event of loss or theft.

Unlocking

After three incorrect PIN entries, the lock can be lifted using the PUK (unlock code). If you do not have the PUK, the responsible ID card authority can assist you.
