The Hauptschule covers grades 5 through 9 and is an inclusive school; a 10th grade may be offered there. Attendance in the 10th grade at the Hauptschule is optional.

Students receive a basic general education. They acquire fundamental knowledge. Students learn basic skills through hands-on, sensory-based learning. Starting in the 6th and 8th grades, students choose a specific elective course, allowing them to focus on areas that align with their interests. English is the first foreign language starting in the 5th grade. Starting in the 9th grade, mathematics and English are taught in the advanced courses G and E.

Students learn how to work independently. Students learn about various professions. Students receive career guidance. Career-oriented and vocational training activities are conducted for a total of at least 80 days (practical training days).

At the end of the 9th grade, students at the Hauptschule can earn the Hauptschule diploma and students at the special education school can earn the diploma in the “Learning” specialization .

Attendance in the 10th school year is optional.

At the end of the 10th school year, the following diplomas can be earned:

• Secondary School Diploma I – Hauptschule Diploma
• Secondary School Certificate I – Realschule Certificate
• Extended Secondary School Diploma I, which, among other things, qualifies students to attend the upper division of a Gymnasium or a vocational Gymnasium at a vocational school
