You will receive a firearms license valid for up to 3 years. You may renew the license twice, each time for up to 3 years.

You receive the firearms license to carry firearms that require a license. A distinction is made between firearms that require a license and those that do not. To carry firearms that do not require a license, you need a Minor Firearms License (see additional information). A list of firearms for which you do not need a permit to purchase or possess can be found in Appendix 2 of the Firearms Act.

It is recommended that you familiarize yourself thoroughly with the provisions of firearms law before submitting your application.

A firearms license authorizes you to carry a firearm outside

• your own residence,
• your own business premises,
• your own private property (such as your own garden), and
• a shooting range

. When carrying the firearm, you must have the firearms permit with you and be able to identify yourself with an ID card or passport.

To obtain a firearms license, you must

• be of the required age and
• demonstrate your need,
• your reliability under firearms law,
• your personal suitability,
• your expertise in handling firearms and ammunition,
• liability insurance covering bodily injury and property damage up to 1 million euros, as well as
• the secure storage of firearms and ammunition

Whether you (still) meet the requirements will be reevaluated upon renewal.

If you move to another city or municipality, you do not need to have your firearms permit transferred.

If you handle firearms and ammunition without the required firearms permit, you face a fine or imprisonment.
