The city of Salzgitter therefore offers the following services and advice soon after the arrival of people with a migration background in Salzgitter:
Important examinations for children and adolescents
The health authorities in Lower Saxony have the statutory duty to examine children in good time before they start school (i.e. 5 - 6-year-olds before they start primary school for the first time).
Children with a refugee background are referred to daycare centers and schools as early as possible. However, as this often takes place outside of the structured enrolment process, (older) children are admitted directly to schools without an initial school check-up and without "U-preventive examinations". The problem: handicaps and the need for support/rehabilitation are not recognized or are recognized too late, and success at school is at risk.
The city of Salzgitter wants to prevent this from happening. The health department only carries out "catch-up" school entry examinations in special cases as a voluntary service.
Furthermore, all children and young people receive a dental health check and a dental check-up.
Vaccinations for children and adults
Preventive vaccinations (except for acute illnesses and painful conditions) are not included in the scope of the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act.
The public health department therefore offers all refugees (children, adolescents, adults) the following vaccinations either as a booster or as a basic immunization at the central vaccination centre in Salzgitter-Bad:
Tetanus, diphtheria, polio, pertussis, measles, mumps, rubella.
Further vaccinations
- are carried out according to the epidemiological situation, for example hepatitis A in the event of an outbreak.
Other services offered by the public health department are
- Hygiene and health advice
- Pregnancy counseling, anonymous birth, §218 counseling,
Mother + Child Foundation - Psychological help
- Youth psychiatric counseling
- Addiction counseling
- Lectures in cooperation with the family education centers, VHS, city library on various topics such as hygiene, vaccinations, child health, etc.
- The city of Salzgitter provides information about the health system and points the way to doctors.
