Appointments are made by the city council for a period of 5 years. Members of the Seniorenbeirat sit on the Committee for Social Affairs and Integration, the Committee for Urban Planning and Construction, the Environment and Climate Committee and the Committee for Education and Culture.

The Seniorenbeirat represents the interests of older people in Salzgitter and promotes the social and cultural concerns of older people. This also includes involvement in the planning and implementation of measures for older people.

Members of the Senior Citizens' Advisory Council traditionally take on so-called home sponsorships and thus ensure the connection between home residents, home owners and local politics.

The Seniorenbeirat has formed the "Social Issues" and "Transport Issues" working groups to prepare its resolutions when necessary. .

The Seniorenbeirat Salzgitter is a member of the Landesseniorenrat Niedersachsen e.V. and the Senioren AG Braunschweig.
