What is the action plan?
People with disabilities often have a hard time.
They are marginalized.
It is harder for them to find a good job.
This means that they often face barriers in everyday life.
In contrast, there has been a United Nations treaty since 2008.
The United Nations is a conference of almost all states in the world.
A conference is an official meeting of many people.
At conferences, agreements are made on many topics.
The treaty says:
Disabled people have rights.
These rights should and must be respected everywhere.
Germany has also signed the treaty.
Salzgitter wants to implement this agreement.
To this end, the city has drawn up an action plan.
An action plan is a kind of list of tasks.
Around 10,000 people with severe disabilities live in Salzgitter.
The city has had an advisory board for people with disabilities since 2011.
It deals with issues and problems faced by people with disabilities.
The politicians on the city council decided in 2012:
We want to create an action plan.
The plan is intended to strengthen the rights of people with disabilities.
Various groups have worked on this:
- the administration of the city
- the Seniors' Advisory Council
- the advisory board for people with disabilities
- the politicians from the city council
- clubs
- associations
The action plan is now complete.
The action plan contains tasks from five areas:
- Education and upbringing
- Accessible buildings and transportation
- Housing and participation
- the world of work
- Leisure and culture.
Tasks in the action plan
There are 68 tasks in the action plan.
The city wants to work on the tasks.
Some tasks have already been completed.
Here are a few examples:
- there are translations for the deaf in the town hall
- more money for associations that offer activities for people with disabilities
- a plan to build homes for people with disabilities
- a competition for ideas and projects for people with disabilities
- a disability-friendly guidance system in the town hall (for example for visually impaired people)
- a city plan to combat problems for people with disabilities
- Toilets in the city for people with disabilities
- more texts in plain language on the Internet
- more information booklets in plain language
- Hiking maps for people with disabilities
