The region's most attractive playground, the pirate camp, is a special experience for younger visitors. Here, children of all ages can conquer a stranded pirate ship and discover the numerous climbing and sliding opportunities. A sporting attraction is the water ski cableway on the western shore of Salzgittersee. Beginners, ambitious amateurs and professionals alike will find ideal technical conditions for practising their fascinating sport on the 800-metre-long circuit.
For further sporting opportunities, there are free outdoor sports facilities with a Finnish running track and pitches for tennis, volleyball, soccer, field hockey, handball and basketball. The Ostbadestrand beach offers wonderful bathing opportunities as well as the chance to let off steam with beach volleyball. The Stadtbad, the ice rink, the stadium and the gliding airfield, tennis and barbecue courts as well as a boat rental complete the diverse range of activities on offer.
Located on the western outskirts of Salzgitter-Lebenstedt, Salzgittersee has become increasingly important as a local recreation area offering a wide range of leisure activities since it was opened for swimming and water sports in May 1963. At the end of the 1950s, planning considerations for the creation of this artificial lake, which had taken place 20 years earlier as part of the construction of a large housing estate, were resumed. In the years following the start of construction in 1960, the project reached its final size of 75 hectares in 1977.
With its 75 hectares, Salzgittersee is the largest rescue area of the German Life Saving Association (DLRG) in the Braunschweig district.
Regular events at Salzgittersee with a national reputation include the New Year's Eve run, the torchlight swim, the flying days and the dragon boat races.
In addition, Bäder, Sport und Freizeit Salzgitter GmbH (BSF) initiates and coordinates over 70 lake-related events and action days, such as water sports and running events, public viewing and music performances, water skiing and stand-up paddle competitions, raft building and climbing activities and disc golf tournaments.
