Salzgitter

Kniestedt manor house

The Kniestedt manor house dates back to 1533 and is probably the oldest half-timbered house standing in Salzgitter.

Kniestedt manor house

Its original location was directly west of the Kniestedter Kreuz road structure, the intersection of Braunschweiger Straße/Bundesstraße 248 and Nord-Süd-Straße. If this junction had been extended to include the western slip roads, the house would have had to be removed. For this reason, the building was demolished beam by beam at its old location in 1975 and rebuilt at the Kurpark in Salzgitter-Bad in 1976. The manor house found a new location in the area of the former salt marshes between Gitter and Vöppstedt.

The relocation of the Kniestedt manor house was the first step towards creating an island of tradition in the Warnestraße and Marienplatz area.

Together with the adjoining Tilly House and the charming half-timbered buildings on Marienplatz, the old Kniestedt manor house is a valuable addition that has created a historic core.

Where the servants used to live on two floors in rooms with very low head heights, there is now the Biedermeier wedding room of the registry office, where couples can say "I do" in a stylish ambience amidst numerous pieces of furniture from the Biedermeier period. The hallway had to be reduced in size due to the installation of the main staircase.
