Salzgitter

Salzgitter ridge

The Salzgitter mountain range, which is over three hundred meters high in places, promises relaxation in the middle of nature with a network of 150 kilometers of hiking trails.

Salzgitter ridge.

On a steep hilltop stand the ruins of Lichtenberg Castle, once built by Henry the Lion (1129-1195) and one of the most important fortresses of its kind. It was used by the great duke of Brunswick to secure his power base against his neighbors in the episcopal city of Hildesheim and imperial Goslar.

The keep offers a magnificent view of northern Salzgitter as far as Brunswick and the northern German low mountain range. The renovated walls also house a new permanent exhibition about the castle and its history.

At the other end of the Lichtenberge, it is worth climbing the Bismarck Tower in Salzgitter-Bad, from where you can enjoy a fantastic view of the Brocken, the highest mountain in the Harz Mountains at 1142 meters, on a clear day.

In the middle of the Salzgitter mountain range lies the Reihersee, the former sewage pond 2. It was created to store the sludge from the wet mechanical iron ore processing in Calbecht and was in operation from May 1944 to 1952. Today it is an insider tip among nature lovers.
