It is primarily the economic strength, the excellent scientific landscape and the location on major European transport axes that make the region with its 3.8 million inhabitants a region of European importance.

Cooperation between local authorities, business, science and the state of Lower Saxony takes place within the framework of the "Metropolregion GmbH". Transport and electromobility, energy and resource efficiency, healthcare, culture and the creative industries are the main areas of work. Salzgitter is a member of the Association of Municipalities in the Metropolregion.

This association of 56 municipalities and municipal associations pools the interests of its members. The association is particularly involved in promoting electromobility and urban-rural cooperation.
