Family centers
What are family centers?
Family centers see themselves as coordination centers for family-friendly services. They strengthen the skills and self-efficacy potential of children and families and promote a family-friendly environment.
The inclusive orientation of family centers lays the foundation for all families to feel welcome and valued.
Our family centers see themselves as a hub in the district in a network of early help for children and parents. They are designed to provide low-threshold access to advice and educational services.
Each center opens its doors to all residents of the district, thus creating new contacts and networks for all visitors (children, parents and specialist staff).

Baby welcome
What is the baby welcome?
All newborns in Salzgitter receive a baby welcome from a volunteer. This volunteer will bring you and your child a folder full of information about the first years of life and offers for families in the Salzgitter area. In addition to the information, each folder also contains small gifts.
How does the baby welcome work?
The baby welcome takes place in the first few months of your baby's life. You don't have to take care of anything yourself or apply for the baby welcome. You will automatically receive an announcement card by post before your baby welcome, on which the day and time of your baby welcome and a contact person are noted.
During this period, a volunteer baby greeter will come to you and personally present you with a welcome gift for you and your baby.
Where can I get in touch for further information and questions?
If you would like to know more about the baby welcome or are interested in volunteering as a baby welcomer yourself, please contact the baby welcome coordinator at the Family Service.

Child day care
What is child day care?
Child day care is a form of childcare close to the family. In other words: individual care in small groups.
Forms of child day care:
- On the premises of the childminder
- In separately rented rooms for child day care
- Association of 2-3 childminders
The childminders are prepared for their responsible work in basic training courses, take part in further training and are in cooperative contact with the family service.
Before childcare begins, the necessary care permit is issued by the youth welfare office (inspection of the premises, first aid course, training in child protection).

Professional activity as a childminder
You can obtain detailed information about working as a childminder and the necessary requirements from the Family Service of the City of Salzgitter.
As a rule, working as a childminder requires a permit in accordance with the German Social Security Code and requires an aptitude test by the City of Salzgitter's Children, Youth and Family Service.
Interested parties who do not have any pedagogical professional training (e.g. as a social pedagogical assistant or educator) have the opportunity to acquire the necessary professional qualification by participating in a basic qualification in child day care.
The next basic qualification for child day care in Salzgitter is expected to start in the 3rd quarter of 2026 (subject to change). If you are interested, please contact the Family Service.
