Old documents from the city archives.

The city archive is the historical memory of the city and the administration. It fulfills the public task of evaluating the city's written records, taking over archival material, securing it permanently, making it accessible and making it available to all interested citizens. In addition to these core archival tasks, the research and communication of the city's history are further focal points.

The city archive is also the contact point for the Ortsheimatpfleger (Ortsheimatpflege) of the city of Salzgitter, who were first appointed in 1987.

The history of the archive

The beginnings of the municipal archive go back to Franz Zobel, a teacher in Salzgitter-Bad from 1911 and later head of the school and culture department of the city of Salzgitter. After retiring from active service in 1954, he was commissioned by the Department of Culture to set up a museum, archive and a scientific local history library in Salder Castle. After the opening of the Salder Castle Museum, the municipal archive moved into its first archive rooms in the basement of the newly built town hall in Lebenstedt in 1964. In 1976, it moved to the administration building of the former Hannoversche Treue mine in Salzgitter-Bad.

Today, the city archive manages around 6,000 linear meters of archive material (old and interim archive) and an archive library with around 45,000 volumes at two locations. A bookbinding and restoration workshop is used for the necessary conservation work.

Stocks

The holdings include the archives of the old salt town of Salzgitter, the archives of the formerly independent municipalities and the archives of the city of Salzgitter founded in 1942 (administrative offices, district offices and municipal offices of the city of Salzgitter from 1942) as well as around 150 estates of associations, companies, institutions and private individuals. In addition, there are collections (newspapers, contemporary history collections, photos, posters, maps and plans).

Utilization

All citizens have the opportunity to view historical sources and the collections and to use the extensive special library. Internships

The municipal archive offers teenagers and young adults the opportunity to take a look behind the scenes as part of an internship and get to know the diverse tasks of a municipal archive:

  • Internships for pupils of all school levels and years
  • Career-oriented internships for upper secondary school students studying to become archivists or historians, history teachers or librarians
