Salzgitter

Soil protection

The City of Salzgitter also performs the tasks of the Lower Soil Protection Authority.

One of the central tasks of this authority is the processing of suspected contaminated sites. These are areas where environmentally hazardous substances have been handled commercially and which are no longer used for this purpose(contaminated sites) and areas where large quantities of waste have been deposited(contaminated landfills).

These areas become contaminated sites if they pose a risk to the environment.

The legal framework for this is provided by the soil protection laws of the federal government and the state of Lower Saxony.

All known old deposits and old sites in the city of Salzgitter are recorded in a register of contaminated sites and assessed in terms of their fundamental hazardousness.
