Salzgitter

Innersteaue land planning area in the city of Salzgitter

The City Council of Salzgitter has designated the areas of the Innerste floodplain where heavy metal contaminated soils occur in large areas as the "Innerste floodplain soil planning area in the city of Salzgitter".

The course of the Innerste in Salzgitter.

The heavy metal contamination - especially lead, cadmium and zinc - in the floodplain soils is a result of historical mining in the Harz Mountains.

In principle, this pollution has been known for a long time, but the extent, both spatially and in terms of levels, has only been determined in recent years by investigations carried out by the city of Salzgitter.

Some of the investigations show that the test and action values of the Federal Soil Protection Ordinance (BBodSchV) have been significantly exceeded and therefore require measures to prevent the effects of heavy metal pollution. As a result, in accordance with soil protection legislation, each property owner would have to have their property investigated at their own expense and remediated depending on the contamination and use.
