Due to high temperatures, trash collection will begin as early as 6:00 a.m.
Due to the forecasted high temperatures, the Salzgitter Municipal Public Utility (SRB) will begin garbage collection as early as 6:00 a.m. from August 10 through August 14, 2026.
Starting work earlier will reduce the physical strain on employees caused by the heat and ensure safe working conditions.
The SRB therefore asks all residents to place their trash bins out for pickup by 6:00 a.m. at the latest on the days mentioned.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. For further questions, please contact the SRB waste collection department at 839-3007.
Great for the Climate: Sorting Trash Properly
The Salzgitter Municipal Public Utility (SRB) is finding an increasing number of cases of improper waste sorting during its regular inspections of waste bins throughout the city. The yellow bins and organic waste bins are particularly affected. To improve recycling and conserve valuable raw materials, the SRB asks all residents to ensure that they sort their waste carefully and correctly.
Every piece of properly sorted packaging makes an important contribution to climate protection and resource conservation. Proper waste separation allows valuable raw materials to be recycled and reused.
The yellow bin is intended exclusively for used and completely empty sales packaging made of plastic, metal, and composite materials.
Plastic household items, toys, dog waste, diapers, or general waste do not belong in the yellow bin.
How you fill the organic waste bin is also very important.
Plastic bags or so-called biodegradable plastic bags must not be disposed of in the organic waste bin, as they do not break down quickly enough in recycling facilities. Organic waste should therefore be placed in the organic waste bin loose or wrapped in newspaper or paper bags.
By sorting waste properly, every citizen can make an important contribution to environmental and climate protection. Further information, sorting guidelines, and explanatory videos are available from the “Mülltrennung wirkt” initiative at www.muelltrennung-wirkt.de. (opens in a new tab)

Organic Waste Bin in the Summer
Tips for Filling and Handling
Summer temperatures can lead to unpleasant side effects in the organic waste bin, such as odors and maggots. This is caused by high humidity and heat, unwrapped food scraps, and poor aeration of the organic waste.
If you keep a few things in mind when filling and handling the organic waste bin, you can prevent odors and maggots from developing:
- Before filling the compost bin, it’s recommended to line the bottom with packing paper, egg cartons, or yard trimmings to absorb moisture and prevent the organic waste from sticking to the bottom of the bin.
- Kitchen waste and food scraps should always be wrapped tightly in newspaper so that flies cannot lay eggs on the food scraps.
- Do not wrap organic waste in plastic bags—not even in bioplastic bags! So-called bioplastics or biodegradable plastics do not break down quickly enough within the typical composting timeframes used in composting facilities, and tiny plastic particles end up in the environment as microplastics via the compost.
- Allow particularly moist organic waste to drain well beforehand. Fresh grass clippings clump together quickly in the organic waste bin and cause odors, so let the grass clippings dry out first and fill the bin loosely.
- The organic waste bin should be kept in a cool, shaded place with the lid closed to prevent excessive heat buildup and, consequently, odor development.
- After emptying the organic waste bin, let it dry thoroughly and be sure to clean the rim and lid in particular.
If maggots appear despite all these measures, you can control them by sprinkling algae lime or rock dust on them.
