Salzgitter

Region against Konrad

In the middle of the Easter vacations, the German government published its "National Disposal Program" for radioactive waste, which is also to be used to operate the expansion of the Konrad mine.

Konrad shaft in Salzgitter.

Until May 31, citizens can submit comments to the responsible Federal Environment Ministry, by e-mail to naprobmub.bundde or by post: Federal Environment Ministry, Department RS III 2, P.O. Box 12 06 29, 53048 Bonn.

The city of Salzgitter will also be submitting its objections to storage in Schacht Konrad. In particular, the concept of non-retrievability of the nuclear waste will be an objection. Overall, however, Konrad must be included in an open-ended search for a site.

The Federal Ministry for the Environment assumes that around 600,000 cubic meters of low and medium-level radioactive waste are available for disposal. However, Konrad is only approved for 303,000 cubic meters. The planned expansion of the shaft from Berlin has met with rejection throughout the region, and its general suitability is also being questioned.

Under the motto "Stop Konrad instead of expanding", the working group is inviting people to the Salzgitter-Bleckenstedt community center on Saturday, April 18, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., for information and specific discussions.

Information sheets and lists of objections are expected to be available until April 18 and can be picked up there.

After Easter, the town will reach an agreement with AG Schacht Konrad, IG Metall and the Landvolk on how to proceed.
