On Friday, April 5, 2019, the official inauguration of the newly designed facilities around Ringelheim station took place. City planning officer Michael Tacke welcomed the invited guests and was delighted with the completed construction work. He also said: "This project would not have been possible without the funding from the regional transport company and the co-financing from the regional association. Thank you for that!" Salzgitter-Ringelheim station was converted to be barrier-free by Deutsche Bahn AG in 2015. Although there were sufficient P+R facilities in the immediate vicinity, there were no bicycle parking facilities and no public toilets.
In order to make the area around the station more attractive, extensive construction work has been carried out there since summer 2018. As part of the redesign, the bus stop was moved to the railroad side. Thanks to this measure and the use of a guidance system for the blind, the entire station area is now barrier-free throughout. As part of the construction work, a bicycle parking facility with a locking system for 40 bicycles, twelve parking spaces and a disabled parking space were also built. The construction company GFI from Wallmoden laid around 1,700 square meters of paving here.
The disabled toilet module, which was newly installed in December 2018 and has been available to all passengers free of charge since the end of January 2019, is also barrier-free.
As there was some unsightly graffiti on the facility during the construction period, it was decided to commission Salzgitter-Bad-based artist Ronny Knorr to design the exterior walls with professional graffiti. The east side is now adorned with the Ringelheim castle and the west side with the former Ringelheim station building.
An application for funding was submitted for the construction work. As a result, 75 percent of the eligible expenditure was funded by the Landesnahverkehrsgesellschaft mbH (LNVG) and co-financed by the Regionalverband Braunschweig (RVB). The total investment costs of the conversion measure amount to approx. 345,000 euros.
The administration would like to thank local residents, commuters and travelers as well as all those affected by the inconvenience caused by the construction work for their understanding
