The city of Salzgitter points out that these can pose a considerable danger to passers-by. The same applies to snow planks that threaten to slide off roofs.
As soon as the thaw predicted for the coming week sets in, the formation of icicles and roof avalanches will increase even further. The city council is therefore calling on homeowners to counter these dangers.
In principle, the owner of the building in question is liable for personal injury and damage to property caused by falling icicles or snow planks.
As part of their general duty to ensure public safety, owners are obliged to remove icicles and snow planks from their buildings if they could pose a danger to the general public. If the homeowner or a company commissioned by the homeowner is unable to remove them, the danger zone must be professionally cordoned off immediately.
The Salzgitter fire department will only provide support and assistance if the building owner is unable to implement these measures or cannot find a private service provider. The fire department operation is subject to a charge for the owner.
