You should be interested in working with groups of children and young people, as well as being reliable and responsible. In addition to a willingness to examine your own behavior, you should enjoy working with children and young people. Furthermore, completion of a first aid course and attendance at all course dates are required. The courses comprise approx. 40 hours and are spread over three weekends or, in the case of the first leisure time, over two weekends in combination with the four-day trial leisure time.
The course content of the youth leader training includes topics on legal issues (duty of supervision, liability and endangering the welfare of children), pedagogy (leadership styles, group phases, group dynamics) and many practical suggestions for action: group games, organization and planning of leisure activities, events and group offers. There are also tips and tricks for public relations work, applying for grants and other assistance for day-to-day work.
The City of Salzgitter's youth development department offers those interested pedagogical training, interesting practical assignments and many opportunities to gain experience in working with other people. An expense allowance for the assignment is usually included.
Acquiring the Youth Leader Card (JULEICA) entitles you to numerous discounts at many public facilities, such as going to the cinema or swimming pool. The qualification and the JuleicaCard can also be useful for job applications.
The first training course begins with the teaching of basic theoretical and legal knowledge over two weekends in May at the Forellenhof youth culture workshop. Participants then have the opportunity to put the knowledge they have learned into practice and reflect on their own actions in the group as a supervisor at the Whitsun retreat on the island of Neuwerk. Additional small teaching units and exercises also take place there. Participation in the short retreat on Neuwerk is an obligatory part of the training.
