Klingebiel takes over the office from Ulrich Mädge, the former mayor of the Hanseatic city of Lüneburg. Klingebiel, 57, is taking over the office for the third time: he was President from 2010 to 2013 and from 2015 to 2017. He has alternated with Mädge as President and Vice President since 2010.
The Executive Committee elected Jürgen Krogmann, Lord Mayor of the City of Oldenburg, as Vice President. The 58-year-old Krogmann has been Lord Mayor and a member of the association's Executive Committee since 2014.
The executive committee is thus resuming a tradition whereby the president is newly appointed at the beginning of a municipal election period and is alternately appointed by a representative of the SPD and CDU. In this way, the Association of Cities and Towns of Lower Saxony wants to contribute to strengthening the umbrella organization of local authorities and ensure that its interests are represented in a neutral party-political manner in the long term.
