Salzgitter

New Salzgitter secret - the obelisk

On July 20, 79 years ago, the first burial took place at the Jammertal cemetery.

After the end of the war, the culture of remembrance took various forms and the large red obelisk was only the first step towards turning the former cemetery for foreigners into a dignified place of remembrance.

In the new episode of the popular series "Salzgitter Secrets", the Medienzentrum of the city of Salzgitter tells the story of the cemetery of honor and the obelisk. It was the first memorial on the cemetery.

It was erected in September 1946 under the supervision of representatives of the Allies. Texts in Polish, Russian, Serbian, English and German can be found on it.

More than 4000 people are buried in the cemetery. They are mainly victims of the National Socialist tyranny in the Salzgitter region. They were forced laborers, prisoners of war and inmates of the surrounding concentration camps. The death rate was so high that in the early summer of 1943 it was decided to establish a separate "foreigners' cemetery". The Reichswerke "Hermann-Göring" made the site with the old field name Jammertal available for this purpose.

Even today, surviving relatives from various nations are still searching for their deceased and in some cases missing loved ones and find what they are looking for at today's memorial site.

If you would like to visit the mysterious places yourself, you can use an online map. All the secrets can be found there. The films that have already been released are marked in red.
