The e-cargo bikes are used by the team from the City of Salzgitter's own facility management company in Lebenstedt and Salzgitter-Bad for journeys. Among other things, the employees use them to transport tools and spare parts to individual municipal properties within a radius of up to five kilometers.
The e-cargo bikes are powered by muscle power and supported by an electric drive. The single-track e-cargo bikes with an extended wheelbase have a lower loading area at the front. They are longer and no wider than the classic bicycle.
By eliminating car journeys and using cargo bikes, emissions of CO2, particulate matter, nitrogen oxide and noise are reduced.
The two e-cargo bikes were funded through the federal program "Promotion of e-cargo bikes for bicycle-based freight transport in industry and municipalities" of the National Climate Protection Initiative.
This purchase is a further component of the climate-neutral vehicle fleet. The basis for this is a council resolution that instructed the administration to draw up an electromobility concept for the city of Salzgitter's vehicle fleet, taking into account current funding guidelines. The federal guideline for the promotion of climate protection projects in the municipal environment ("municipal guideline" for short) covers 80 percent of the costs for the concept development.
