Information on the European Parliament election on June 09, 2024

The election to the 10th European Parliament will take place on June 9, 2024.

Right to vote:

In line with democratic voting rights, voters go to the relevant polling station on election Sunday. It is particularly important that voters exercise their right to vote, as only those who go to the polls have a say in who represents and governs the population at European, federal, state or local level.

Germans are entitled to vote if they have reached the age of 16 on election day, have German citizenship or that of an EU member state and have had their main place of residence in the city of Salzgitter for at least 3 months on election day. Furthermore, the voter must not be excluded from the right to vote due to a civil or criminal court decision and must be listed in the voters' register.

On election Sunday, polling stations in the city are open from 8.00 am to 6.00 pm.

Election notification:

Once the electoral roll has been compiled on April 26, 2024, work will begin on sending out around 78,000 voter notifications. Anyone who has not received a voter's notification by May 19, 2024 should contact the electoral office by May 23, 2024 at the latest.

Postal vote:

Anyone who is unable to vote at their polling station can apply for a polling card and make use of the postal voting option. Polling cards and documents for postal voting in the Europawahl election are available from the postal voting office of the City of Salzgitter upon written application. The application form on the back of the polling card can be used. It is not possible to apply for postal voting documents by telephone, but by fax or on the Internet using the online form at www.salzgitter.de. (opens in a new tab)

It is easier and quicker to apply for postal voting documents by scanning the QR code printed on the front of the polling card. All voters need is a smartphone or tablet to scan the QR code. The online form is already pre-filled with the personal data. Finally, only the data protection provisions need to be confirmed.

The postal vote can be applied for until the Friday before the election, June 7, 2024 by 6 p.m. From June 5, 2024, postal votes will only be sent at the risk of the person entitled to vote, as timely delivery cannot be guaranteed. In these cases, postal voting documents should be collected.

The electoral office would like to point out an important change to postal voting documents. For the first time for the Europawahl elections, the ballot paper envelope will not have the familiar blue color, but will be in neutral white. However, the white ballot paper envelope is clearly marked with the words "ballot paper envelope for postal voting".

Postal transit times:

The special time required for postal voting must be taken into account when submitting the application. If voting documents are to be sent abroad and returned from abroad, the postal delivery times in particular must be taken into account. The postal vote should therefore be applied for as early as possible. The postal ballot letter must be received by the office indicated on the postal ballot letter by 6 p.m. on June 9, 2024 at the latest. Under no circumstances may the postal ballot letter be handed in at a polling station. The person entitled to vote must ensure that it is received on time.

Powers of attorney and illnesses:

Applying for and receiving postal voting documents for another person is only possible with a corresponding power of attorney and for a maximum of four people. In the event of sudden serious illness, the polling card and postal voting documents can be applied for and issued by 3 p.m. on election Sunday.

Changes in two polling stations:

The electoral office would like to draw your attention to important changes at two polling stations:

  • The former Mietertreff Neißestraße (address: Neißestraße 46 - 48) is now called WoWieTreff with the address Lessingstraße 17a.
  • The community room in Osterlinde is now listed as "Am Bache 1".

It should be noted that these are the familiar polling stations, where nothing has changed apart from the name and address.
