Salzgitter

Participation in the further development of Salzgittersee

The public participation event for the further development of Salzgittersee, where interested parties had the opportunity to actively participate in the planning process and contribute their opinions, took place on 16.04.2024 in the Kulturscheune in Salzgitter-Lebenstedt.

The event, organized by the responsible planning office Amsel Kollektiv and the urban planning department, offered a platform for an open exchange and constructive discussions.

The evening began with an informative part. City planning officer Michael Tacke explained the significance of the project for urban development and emphasized the importance of public participation. Lena Bruns from the Amsel Kollektiv planning office presented insights into the target and structural concept and Wolfgang Rosenthal, deputy chairman of the Salzgittersee citizens' initiative, commented on the proposals from the perspective of the citizens' initiative.

This was followed by an open round of questions and discussion, during which participants had the opportunity to express their concerns and receive direct answers. The proposals to turn away from development at the southern end of the lake, as well as the organization of the lake areas into the proposed and revised thematic areas, met with broad approval. The importance of the care and maintenance of the existing infrastructure at the lake and the ongoing involvement of the public in the further process was also emphasized.

In the second part of the evening, the participants were invited to actively take part in an ideas workshop. Under the overarching question "Would you give the city the mandate to pursue these topics further?", they discussed the controversial topics of "new mixed-use district" and "harbor promenade" in small groups. This interactive ideas workshop made it possible for the public to contribute their ideas and take a stand.

The event marks an important milestone in the participatory planning process and underlines the city's joint efforts to shape the future of Salzgittersee in line with the needs of urban society.

The presentation on the event can be viewed below.

Around 60 years ago, the idea of developing a recreational area with a lake near the town center of Salzgitter-Lebenstedt became a reality. The city council of Salzgitter decided to further develop the entire leisure, sports and recreation area. Amsel Kollektiv Architektur und Stadtforschung from Braunschweig was commissioned to develop a target and structural concept with themed areas around the lake and a potential new urban quarter.

What is the target and structural concept based on?

The influences on the structural concept are manifold. The previous steps form the basis: The Leisure & Tourism concept from 2015, the results of the 2018-19 participation process and the projects implemented and resolutions passed by the Council since then.

The completed target and structural concept serves as a framework for the further development of Salzgittersee in the future. It further specifies the topics already defined in the previous steps and adapts them to the findings of the public participation process.

The concept brings together the findings from the participation process and harmonizes them with overarching planning objectives. This lays the foundation for the further development of the lake. The draft resolution on the target and structural concept is to be submitted to the Council for a decision at the end of 2024.
