Salzgitter

City (partial) walks to marvel at

"Hereinspaziert - Türen, Tore, Brücken und Pfosten in Salzgitter": This is the title of the new brochure by the Ortsheimatpfleger of the city of Salzgitter, which is dedicated to a special topic with around 60 pages of things to see, discover and marvel at.

18 of the 28 Ortsheimatpfleger of the city of Salzgitter present the new brochure, hot off the press, against the backdrop of the winter forest in the Salder castle courtyard at their end-of-year meeting with Jan Erik Bohling, head of the cultural department, and Dr. Claudia Böhler from the city archive.

The current issue in the "Ortsheimatpfleger" series is already available to buy...

Everyone walks through doors or gates or crosses bridges every day, but hardly anyone takes a closer look at these places or knows their historical significance. Yet they have an important function: bridges connect places separated by obstacles, doors separate private life from the public. In earlier times, the authorities used gates to exclude ordinary subjects.

The Ortsheimatpfleger went in search of traces. On around 60 pages, the volunteers present a selection of doors and gates as well as bridges from various parts of Salzgitter, some of which have long since disappeared or had to change their location. The oldest bridge in Salzgitter over the Mühlengraben near Hohenrode can be found in the brochure, as can the now dismantled bridge over the tracks at the disused railroad station in Barum or the inscriptions on the former "Sprützenhaus" in Sauingen. The fire station, built in 1843, is the oldest remaining fire station in Salzgitter.

In short: there are many special features to see and architectural secrets to discover in the new brochure....
