The event is a cooperation between the Municipal Museum, the professional fire department of the city of Salzgitter and the volunteer fire departments in Salzgitter. The exhibition was designed by the Stadt- und Industriemuseum Rüsselsheim. The Salzgitter aspects were developed by the museum.
Fire - it is "a good servant and a bad master". If it is controlled, it provides warmth, light and comfort. It is then used to prepare food and make all kinds of useful things. But woe betide you if the fire gets out of control! Then there is the threat of fire and destruction!
In the hands-on exhibition "Who runs when there's a fire?", children can trace mankind's ancient relationship with fire and learn why it was and is so important to have it, but even more important to control it. Knowledge, fitness and teamwork can be tested at hands-on stations.
Information on the history of fire departments in the Salzgitter area is of course a must. And as a highlight, real firemen and firewomen will be on site at the museum on certain dates to provide information about their work.
Finally, a look behind the scenes of the fire department will familiarize guests young and old with the way they work and their diverse tasks. After visiting the exhibition, every child will know what to do in the event of a fire and what everyone can do themselves to support the lifesavers in uniform if it really is a case of: "Fire! There's a fire!".
The topics are: "Fire and flame: It burns like tinder" - "Until the spark jumps over: Making fire without matches and the cultural history of fire" - "Where are the dangers lurking? Preventing fires and accidents" - "Fire lab: Experiments on the subject of fire" - "Extinguishing fires made easy: A well-organized team" - "More than firefighting - fire departments in action" - "From the station to the source of the fire: Obstacle course for emergency vehicles (media station)" - "Are you fit? What firefighters need to be able to do" - "Where does the water for extinguishing fires come from?" - "Every second counts: How to report emergencies" - "Clothing and equipment of firefighters and firefighters internationally" - "Fire brigade in Salzgitter: past and present".
The program
- On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, younger guests in particular are invited to take part in fire experiments in the exhibition at 11.30 am, 2 pm and 3.30 pm. Participation is free, the number of places is limited. Pre-registration is not possible.
- Additional museum educational activities for children's groups and school classes also offer a special insight into the exhibition.

Guided tours for children's groups and school classes
The offer is aimed at children's fire departments, pre-school groups and school classes. Questions about what fire actually is are answered in a playful way. How does it start? How can it be extinguished? What are the tasks of the fire department? How long has the fire department been around? How do I make an emergency call? And after visiting the exhibition, every child will know what to do in the event of a fire and how to help the lifesavers in uniform.
Simple experiments are also offered in the fire lab for children from grade 1 upwards. The group size for the fire lab is limited to a maximum of 12 children. Larger groups of children must therefore be split up and there should be at least 1 active accompanying person for every 10 children.
Age: minimum 5 to maximum 12 years
Duration: 60-90 minutes
A visit to the exhibition and the guided tour are free of charge for schools, pre-schools and children's and youth brigades from the Salzgitter municipal area.
