Salzgitter

Council meeting on December 10

The Salzgitter City Council discussed the introduction of mandatory community service for asylum seekers on Wednesday, December 10, 2025.

A motion was passed instructing the administration to develop a concept, possibly involving various organizations, that implements the obligation enshrined in the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act to accept non-profit work opportunities. The aim is to integrate asylum seekers and promote language acquisition. At the same time, a positive contribution to the community is to be generated.

The city of Salzgitter has faced the challenging task of offering refugees prospects for many years. This obligation is accompanied by considerable challenges for the social, education and integration system. The aim is therefore to examine whether and how such a model can be implemented in Salzgitter under the given legal and social framework conditions.

At the request of politicians, the administration should also work towards "adapting the federal government's legislation in such a way as to open up the possibility of faster access to the labor market and thus support integration and counteract the labor shortage."

The committee also approved a grant agreement between the city of Salzgitter and Tafel Salzgitter e.V.. As is known, after intensive negotiations under the leadership of Lord Mayor Frank Klingebiel, the food bank can remain in its current accommodation.

The current and detailed agenda can be viewed in the Council information system.
