Kampstraße Area Included in Urban Development Assistance Program

The Lower Saxony Ministry of Economic Affairs, Transportation, and Construction recently announced that the Kampstraße area has been included in the “Social Cohesion—Shaping Community Life Together” funding program.
The redevelopment ordinance required for this was approved by the City Council on September 30.

Up to 8.41 million euros in funding from the “Social Cohesion” program is available for the revitalization of the Kampstraße neighborhood.

Up to 8.41 million euros in funding from the “Social Cohesion” program is available for the revitalization of the Kampstraße neighborhood.

Mayor Frank Klingebiel explains: “This is good news for all residents of the neighborhood around Kampstraße, for Lebenstedt, and for all of Salzgitter: Two years ago, the City Council approved the initial application to include the Kampstraße area in the state’s urban development funding program. In 2025, our application could not be considered by the state due to issues of equitable distribution. Thanks to a modification of the eligible area and changes to certain substantive points—which the City Council also approved last year—the area was considered in the 2026 selection process and was included in the “Social Cohesion—Shaping Community Life Together” funding program for 15 years. This means that during the funding period, up to 8.41 million euros in funding will be available for improving housing and the living environment, as well as for social projects, neighborhood management, and climate protection measures. Without this funding, we as a city would not be able to finance these projects solely with municipal funds.

Regarding the Kampstraße funding area:

The area includes Kampstraße, all side streets, the JKW Forellenhof, and St. Michael’s Church, located behind the “Am Kreisel” intersection.

In 2023, preliminary studies involving extensive public participation were conducted for the Kampstraße area as well as the Saldersche Straße area. The findings from these studies form the basis for further action.

Regarding the “Social Cohesion—Shaping Community Life Together” program:

The “Social Cohesion—Shaping Community Life Together” program continues and further develops the funding priorities of the former “Social City” program. The program aims to initiate neighborhood-focused, inclusive, and socially oriented urban development. The goal is to support cities and municipalities in stabilizing and revitalizing neighborhoods facing urban planning, social, and economic challenges—such as high unemployment, inadequate housing conditions, and cultural deficits—through urban development measures. This is intended to bring about a sustainable improvement in the housing and living conditions of residents in these neighborhoods.
