In order to bundle and coordinate relevant measures to improve cycling, the city council commissioned the offices of plan&rat from Braunschweig and PGV from Hanover to draw up a cycling concept and a signposting register. This was approved by the council in December 2014.

Based on a comprehensive inventory and analysis, the concept makes proposals for the design of the city-wide cycle path network, which on the one hand connects all 31 districts as directly as possible for everyday traffic and on the other hand offers routes that focus on experiencing the landscape and sights. To this end, a new route was developed to complement the existing themed routes, the "Route of Industrial Heritage", which - divided into the tours "Iron and Steel" (35.5 kilometers) and "Sugar and Salt" (31 kilometers) - leads through the history of Salzgitter.

At the heart of the cycling concept's recommendations are various measures to improve the cycling situation by optimizing or creating new cycling facilities, building crossing aids and improving the guidance of cycling traffic at junctions. The concept also contains recommendations for bicycle parking facilities at local rail transport stops and for the design of cycle route signage.
