Description
As a German citizen over the age of 16, you are required to have a valid ID card or a valid passport.
If you wish, you can also apply for an ID card earlier.
You can use your ID card to prove your identity to government agencies and businesses. You can also travel to all countries in the European Union (EU) with it.
You apply for your ID card at the citizens’ office in your primary place of residence. You may apply at any other citizens’ office if you have a valid reason. In this case, an out-of-jurisdiction fee applies.
ID cards contain an electronic proof of identity, known as the “online ID.” This allows you to verify your identity online. You may use the online ID after your 16th birthday.
The ID card is valid for 6 years, provided you are under 24 years of age at the time of application. It becomes invalid before the stated expiration date if:
-
The information on the ID card—such as your last name or first name—is no longer accurate
- except for: address, height
- you are no longer clearly recognizable in your photo. This can be the case in particular with ID cards for infants or very young children.
If you wish, you can provide your email address to receive a reminder approximately 6 months before the ID expires.
If you urgently need an identification document, you can first apply for a temporary ID card. This is valid for a maximum of 3 months.
