Devices used to generate or reproduce sound (sound devices), in particular loudspeakers, sound reproduction devices, musical instruments, and similar devices, may only be used at a volume that does not significantly disturb bystanders or adversely affect the natural environment. If this is not the case, the use of such devices is prohibited on public thoroughfares, in public facilities, and in and on other facilities intended for general use, as well as at tent sites and campgrounds, at swimming pools and beaches, and in the great outdoors.

These requirements do not apply

• to audible signals warning of danger,
• to required signaling and warning devices,
• to liturgical bell ringing, and
• to devices used as part of a public transportation system.

Exceptions apply to the use of sound-emitting devices for the purpose of campaigning in European, federal, state, or Kommunalwahlen during the six weeks preceding the election by political parties or other political organizations.

Upon request, the competent authority may grant exceptions on a case-by-case basis if there is a public or overriding private interest. The exemption shall be granted subject to conditions and restrictions to protect the general public and the neighborhood. In addition, the competent authority may generally permit temporary (musical) performances in inner-city pedestrian zones.
