What happens during the pre-school health exam?

The school entry examination is required by law and is designed to assess the child’s health and development in preparation for starting school.

Among other things, the examination assesses vision and hearing, language development, motor and social-emotional skills, and overall health. It also includes a medical examination.

The results can provide important insights into whether a child still needs support or additional assistance to get off to a good start in school.

Easily book appointments online

Guardians of children who will be of school age in the coming school year can conveniently book their appointment for the school entry examination online starting in September.

With the central registration portal, the City of Salzgitter simplifies the scheduling process and offers families more flexibility in planning.

Invitations to the school entry examination will be sent out gradually, based on the children’s dates of birth. The oldest children in each school-entry cohort will be invited first. This ensures that the children’s individual developmental levels at the time of the examination are taken into account as effectively as possible, enabling an age-appropriate assessment.

Along with the invitation letter, guardians will receive a personal booking code. They can use this to select a suitable examination appointment on the online portal within a specified time frame.

Appointment changes and cancellations can also be made independently online. In addition, required documents can be submitted digitally. The QR codes included in the cover letter can also be used to access the preparation sheet and the questionnaire.

In this way, we aim to reduce the organizational burden on families and enable the most flexible scheduling possible.

No internet access?

No problem. Families who cannot use the online portal can still schedule an appointment with our department by phone.

Children with increased support needs

For children and families who are already known to our specialized service and who have increased support needs, we will contact their legal guardians in person as usual to arrange a suitable appointment for the school entry examination.
