To ensure the highest possible level of safety during the transport of dangerous goods, special regulations apply to the transport of dangerous goods. Dangerous goods are defined as substances and objects that, due to their properties or condition, pose a threat to public safety and order during transport and/or may endanger human life and health, as well as harm the environment or important public assets.

For certain dangerous goods, a route determination is required pursuant to Section 35a of the Ordinance on the Domestic and Cross-Border Transport of Dangerous Goods by Road, Rail, and Inland Waterways (GGVSEB). This requirement is set forth in Section 35b of the GGVSEB. As a general rule, the transport of these dangerous goods must take place on federal highways (with the exception of certain specified sections).

For areas outside the federal highway network, transport pursuant to Section 35a(3) of the GGVSEB requires an individual route designation from the competent authority. This is issued for a limited or unlimited number of trips within a specified period.
