What does the Youth Parliament do and how can I get involved?
The youth parliament of the city of Salzgitter represents the interests of young people in Salzgitter. Elected representatives can make recommendations on political decisions, can work on issues that affect them and, as a youth parliament, can introduce issues into local politics themselves. Furthermore, the spokesperson has an advisory seat on the youth welfare committee and can represent the voice of young people there. In 8 to 12 meetings per year, the youth parliament meets in public and votes on motions, proposals and ideas. In the meantime, internal meetings are held to hold conferences, plan projects or exchange ideas. The youth parliament also stays in contact with the young people they represent or involves them. The youth parliament also organizes its own public relations work. In its activities, the youth parliament receives support from the administration.
How you can get involved
The Youth Parliament has a total of 28 places available. 25 places for 14 to 20-year-olds and 3 places for 12 to 13-year-olds.
To become a member of the youth parliament, you can apply as a candidate for the youth parliament election every two years. The requirements are that you are between 12 and 20 years old, live in Salzgitter and obtain 10 supporting signatures from young people who are also between 12 and 20 years old. If there are vacancies in the youth parliament during the election period, you also have the opportunity to apply for one of these seats at any time. In this case, the Youth Parliament itself decides on the admission of new members.

Who do I turn to if something really annoys me in my neighborhood?

My parents kicked me out
Have you just been kicked out of your home? Do you need help immediately? Please call the police on 110. The police officers know how they can best help you in your situation.
Would you like to talk about it?
We advise, accompany and support you on your way to an independent lifestyle.
My parents are separating
It is certainly not easy for you when your parents separate. Perhaps there were often arguments beforehand or you felt helpless and torn. Like you, many other young people feel the same way when their parents split up. Sometimes it helps to talk to someone about it or share experiences. You can get information and help here. We will listen to you. We take you seriously. Anonymous and confidential counseling is possible!
I am of legal age. Am I entitled to maintenance from my parents?
You are entitled to maintenance as long as you are trying to complete an apprenticeship (e.g. still attending school, doing an apprenticeship or studying). You are then entitled to maintenance until you complete your first apprenticeship or possibly even for the duration of any subsequent studies. However, you are only entitled to so-called maintenance as an adult if you have no or only a small entitlement to vocational training assistance (BaföG). It is best to apply for BaföG at the relevant office. You are also welcome to contact us at the same time if you are unsure.
Who can help me get maintenance?
You can get free support from the Youth Welfare Office until you are 21 years old. The assistance team will then advise and support you in asserting your claims. In addition to the Youth Welfare Office, you can of course also seek the help of a lawyer. If you are already 21 years old, this is your only option. You can obtain a so-called counseling certificate from the local court for a consultation with a lawyer, in which case the costs of the consultation may be covered.
You can also get advice from the assistance office of the city of Salzgitter.

What is a title?
A maintenance certificate or a maintenance assessment order is also legally referred to as a title. The debtor undertakes to pay you maintenance in an enforceable document. This was usually recorded before you reached the age of majority and is generally valid beyond this age.
If no maintenance is paid to you despite the deed, you can use this title to enforce your claims, e.g. by garnishing your salary. If you have any questions about your title or how to enforce it, please contact us.
How long am I entitled to maintenance from my parents?
In principle, you are entitled to maintenance until you have completed your first course of training and possibly even for the duration of any subsequent studies.
You can get advice from the assistance office of the city of Salzgitter.

I don't want to go to school anymore
Talk to your parents, other relatives and/or friends about your difficulties. Confide in someone in any case! There are also people at school that you can talk to, e.g. the counselor or liaison teacher and the school social worker. You can get in touch with them via your school's office.
You can have confidential discussions there and expect help from a professionally trained person.
By law, pupils are required to attend school for 12 years and must attend a mainstream school for 9 of those years. If you no longer want to go to school at all, you should talk to someone you trust about it.
You can also get help from the counseling service for young people in the city of Salzgitter.
Who can I turn to without my parents finding out?
You can contact our counseling center. The topics can be very different: stress, bullying, obesity, lovesickness or simply talking to someone else. We are here for you and will listen to you.
You also have the option of contacting the General Social Service (ASD).
As a child or young person, you have the right to contact the youth welfare office in all matters relating to upbringing and development (Section 8 (2) SGB VIII).
As a child or young person, you also have the right to advice without the knowledge of the legal guardian (§8 Para. 3 SGB VIII).

You can also contact your liaison teacher or the school social workers at your school.
The staff at the children's and youth centers will also listen to you and have a so-called "duty of confidentiality" if you want to discuss something confidential.
What do my feelings mean?
Are you constantly irritable or aggressive, or are you in a state of emotional ups and downs? Have you fallen in love with the same sex? Or maybe you're in the "wrong" body? Let's look at your inner chaos together and see what it means.
Anorexia, drug use, contraception, money problems ...
At the Psychological Counseling Center, we will look together to see where you can get the best help for your concerns. There are many experts who are particularly knowledgeable about certain topics and have a lot of experience to help you.
Do you have problems with alcohol and drugs and don't know who can help you?
You can contact the AWO Salto Addiction Help Center with your questions and concerns. Here you can get advice on all topics relating to addiction. Counseling is free of charge and your issues will be treated confidentially. The staff at AWO Salto Suchthilfe will work with you to find out what help might be suitable for you and support you with the next steps.
Where can I get information on contraception?
Everyone has the right to shape their own life, also with regard to family planning and the question of whether children are desired and if so, when. At pro familia, you have the opportunity to find out about different methods of contraception (e.g. the pill, condom, IUD, diaphragm or hormone-free methods) and to find the method that suits you best. The consultations are free of charge.
What does confidentiality mean?
Certain people, for example doctors and employees of counseling centers, have a duty of confidentiality. This means that they are not allowed to pass on what you tell them without your permission - not even to your parents! There are only a few exceptions, but you will be informed of these in advance.

Media addiction and how I can recognize it
There is not only addiction to stimulants (alcohol, nicotine, etc.), but also addiction to social networks, games and other media content such as online casinos. Here are a few signs to help you recognize whether you may already be addicted:
- Uncontrolled media consumption, often for hours at a time
- Your usage times are getting longer and longer
- You almost only think about your time on digital media
- Trying to use less media is more difficult than you thought
- Neglecting (extracurricular) obligations and social contacts
- Withdrawal symptoms when not using, e.g. anger, irritability, despair, depression
- Physical side effects such as headaches and back pain, lack of sleep, etc.
- Concealment or trivialization of use behavior and possible consequential problems
Observe yourself and get help by talking to people you trust. AWO Salto Suchthilfe in Salzgitter also offers consultation hours on the subject of media addiction.

My boyfriend/girlfriend wants to kill himself/herself, what should I do?
If he or she is attempting suicide, call the emergency number 112 immediately.
If he or she expresses suicidal thoughts:
Take them seriously. He or she has reached a point in life where he or she no longer knows what to do. Make it clear to him or her that you cannot keep this to yourself. Think together about who she or he would like to confide in. Sometimes this is easier with unknown people, for example a doctor or a counseling center. Accompany him or her there or turn to other helpful adults. There is always a solution - you can even call the emergency number 112.
My boyfriend/girlfriend is hurting himself/herself, what should I do?
Does someone in your circle of friends need help, for example someone who just listens? Good that you are there. Offer your friend to come to our counseling center. We will also listen and try to find out together what is behind the need to self-harm. You can also come to us for support.
I have to go to the police, what should I do?
As a rule, your legal guardians (i.e. either your parents or a guardian) will also have received information about the invitation. Take your mother or father with you to the hearing (or witness hearing, depending on the reason why you were invited). In principle, you may also take another trusted person with you if you are afraid to tell your parents; however, this trusted person must be of legal age.
The police will inform you of your rights.
You (and your parents or your confidant) are also very welcome to seek advice before the interview at the Juvenile Aid in Criminal Proceedings (JuHiS).

What should I do if strangers write to me and sexually harass me?
First of all, you should NOT send the person any data about yourself (this includes photos and videos). People often appear very friendly and offer you gifts (Game Pass, skins, subscriptions, etc.) to ingratiate themselves and pretend to be around your age (with a fake profile). In most cases, however, sexual innuendos and offers, as well as threats, are made after a very short time. Don't respond and get your parents, relatives, friends or another trusted person to help you.
Make sure you talk to someone and don't feel ashamed, because you can't help what this online contact is doing to you. You should definitely file a complaint with the police together with your parents, as the mere attempt to have sexual contact with minors has been a criminal offense since 2020. Please collect evidence (screenshots, printouts, etc.) and block the contact without responding. You should also report the person to the social network so that others are also protected.
"Dickpics" and what can I do?
Are you on the Internet and have received an unsolicited picture of a stranger's private parts? Take a screenshot of it (preferably with the stranger's username and/or cell phone number) and go to the Dickstinction homepage, for example. You can file a criminal complaint there within a minute.
But also confide in people with whom you can easily talk about it. In the event of sexual abuse, you can contact the help hotline free of charge (see below).
In any case, you should report the contact to the social network, block them and do not reply to the messages.
What do I do in the event of cyberbullying?
First, collect evidence of the actions on the internet by using the screenshot function on your smartphone or taking screenshots on your PC. Do not respond to the posts/publications online and report them to the respective provider (e.g. Instagram, TikTok, etc.) after taking the screenshot. Protect yourself and block people who are not good for you and see how you can set up your profile securely. You can find tips for this on Klicksafe.de, for example
One of the most important steps now is to open up and talk to someone you trust (parents, relatives, trusted teacher, school social worker, etc.). Together with this person, you can get other people you trust on board to try to talk to the person(s) who are bullying you (if these people are known). A clarifying conversation can resolve the situation by asking the perpetrator(s) to delete all material and posts.
If there is no insight or the perpetrator(s) is/are unknown, you should file a complaint with the police. If you are a minor, you will need your parents to do this. The evidence collected beforehand is very important here.
My picture has been shared online, what can I do?
Write to the person and ask them to delete the image. Section 22 of the Art Copyright Act, for example, states that images may only be published if the person depicted has given their consent. So if you have not given permission, no one is allowed to simply post a picture or video of you on the internet or share it in a messenger such as WhatsApp.
Also write to the admin, i.e. the operator of the internet platform in question, and report the image with a request to delete it, as it was posted on the internet without your permission.
It also makes sense to take screenshots of the post with the picture or video of you in case you want to file a complaint. If the person who posted your picture or video does not delete it, you can go to the police and report it. If you are still a minor, you will need the help of your parents.
What should I look out for when I take nude photos of myself?
Love and sexuality are exciting and an intimate matter. Perhaps you feel the need to explore the changes in your body through photos or videos. Or you and your partner may send each other intimate photos.
In this case, make sure that the photos or videos are taken in such a way that you are not recognizable (e.g. face, tattoos, distinctive features). Unfortunately, nude photos are often used to threaten or expose someone. If you break up with your girlfriend or boyfriend, for example, old pictures or videos could be sent as so-called "revenge porn" and posted on the internet. Although this is not allowed (and you can file a complaint here too!), the picture is on the internet and unfortunately often spreads very quickly. You should also delete such intimate pictures or videos from your smartphone so that no one with access to this data can misuse it.
If you want to file a complaint with the police if others have published the material against your will, then you need the support of your legal guardian(s) (parents, etc.) if you are a minor.

Security settings for my social media profile
Secure your profiles on the Internet by making them private. This way, not everyone in the world can find out everything about you and you can use friend requests to determine who can see your profile. Each social network has different settings for this - so you should simply take a little time to explore the functions at your leisure. In addition to a secure password (see next FAQ for more information), you should also not reveal too much about yourself. Nobody can force you to publish all your data (address, telephone number, real name [instead of a nickname], school career, etc.) on the Internet. It's better to be more careful than to regret it later.
Password security and how to use it
Passwords are used to protect your profiles on social networks, shopping sites and gaming platforms, for example. You should remember this password well and keep it to yourself - even your best friends, siblings or parents don't need to know it, as it protects your privacy.
A good password consists of at least 10 characters, with upper and lower case letters as well as numbers and special characters. It should not be found in any dictionary or contain private details about you [e.g. name of your pet]. You should also use different passwords on different pages so that stolen passwords do not open all your pages/profiles.
2FA (two-factor authentication) also helps to protect your profiles even better. For this, you need a randomly generated code that you have to enter after every login. You will then receive this code by text message or in a separate app, for example.
Hidden and insidious radicalization
More and more radical groups (right-wing and left-wing extremists, Islamists, etc.) are using social networks or online games to make contact. They entice you with interesting offers and are always very friendly in their dealings with you. They subliminally try to radicalize you and lead you down the wrong path.
If you have contact with such people, don't get involved in their games, but collect evidence (screenshots etc.), talk to people you trust (parents, family, friends, school) and report them to the social network. Block them and do not respond to any further contact attempts. It is also possible to contact the police (as a minor with parents or legal guardians).
Also check your circle of friends to see if there are any friends who have suddenly changed a lot, become withdrawn or have a blatant way of thinking. This can be a sign of radicalization. You should try to talk to them or seek support.
Radicalization is a gradual process and you don't always notice it. But there is always a way out and there are many organizations that can help you, for example veritas.
Challenges, tests of courage and chain letters
In social networks, there are always requests for challenges, tests of courage or the forwarding of chain letters. Consider beforehand whether the challenge etc. could be dangerous for you or others (including animals). Smaller children in particular could become afraid of such things and should be protected.
If there is no danger to others, then you can try out the challenge for yourself and enjoy the shared experience. However, bear in mind that everything that is on the internet stays there forever - someone is bound to save it and upload it again somewhere without your knowledge. So it's best not to post anything that could be unpleasant for you later.
Influencers - The influence on my opinion
We all have idols that we look up to and think are great - and that's absolutely fine. And yet we should be careful not to blindly believe all the information from our favorite influencers, but rather research things ourselves instead.
Influencers are often paid to say certain things in order to sell products. Even the opinions of your favorite stars are not always correct. You can carry out a fact check on reputable websites.
Influencers on social networks often live in a perfect world and are sold a "feel good factor" - but they also suffer fates, sometimes don't look perfectly styled or even suffer from depression. But only very few also report on the darker side of life because they want to sell a certain image or because companies that pay them for advertising expect a positive appearance. Behind this job is a lot of work and a lot of time that has to be invested.
Have the courage to question certain aspects of your idol and form your own opinion - this doesn't mean that you should stop following influencers, but be critical and take a realistic look at what they say.
Fake news - Not every piece of news on the internet is really true
The internet is a huge space with many real and fake profiles and therefore many different opinions. At first glance, this is perfectly okay - and yet there are people online who post articles that are lies. This is where you need to use your common sense and do your own research to find out whether the news online is true or so-called "fake news".
Sites like Mimika (see below) uncover these fake news very quickly. But each of us can also recognize fakes ourselves if we look very closely and take a little time to research. Google reverse image search can also show where the image you are looking at actually comes from (-> click on the small camera in Google image search and upload the image you want to check).
The algorithms (computer calculations in the background) of social networks, for example, ensure that once you have clicked, liked or shared something, you see more and more similar posts because the app wants you to use it for longer. This makes it easy to believe that everything you see or read must be true. Just be smarter and inform yourself! Don't trust any computer program that makes new suggestions and don't spread news that you're not 100% sure is true.
