SRB winter information
Preparations for winter road maintenance at the SRB don't just start when the roads become icy and slippery. Road salt is procured early on and the vehicles are upgraded. But it is not only the technology that is made fit for winter, the employees have also received their annual training for winter service operations. Ice and snow are expected every winter, but the gritting and clearing technology used is far from the same.

The SRB trains all winter service employees on the new vehicle technology before the start of the season. When operating the vehicles and setting up the spreaders and snow ploughs, every move has to be right, because the job has to be done quickly and almost always starts in the dark. The deployment plan is also presented; newly appointed personnel initially only drive the gritting tours as co-drivers. Environmental aspects of minimizing the use of gritting agents are also explained.

In an emergency, the SRB's eight gritting vehicles are deployed from 4.00 a.m. to clear ice and snow from all roads that are connected to the street cleaning service. The SRB deploys its winter services according to urgency categories, so emergency routes, such as access roads to hospitals, are gritted first, followed by bus routes and larger carriageways. The SRB ensures that rush-hour traffic can flow as smoothly as possible and that night-shift drivers do not experience any nasty surprises.

A pre-wetted salt, a mixture of salt and lye, is always spread to thaw black ice and snow. Wet salt remains on the road surface. If only dry salt without lye were spread, drifts would occur and the de-icing effect would no longer exist.

Different amounts of salt must be spread depending on the temperature and humidity of the road surface. In freezing wet conditions, for example, 5 to 10 g of salt is spread per square meter, which corresponds to a full teaspoon. The automatic spreader on the vehicle adds the brine proportionally.

Despite all its efforts, the SRB also asks road users to be considerate and adapt their driving style to the weather conditions. For example, the snow clearing vehicles should not be overtaken carelessly on slippery roads or obstructed by parked cars.
