Rent index: City of Salzgitter surveys tenants and landlords

Around 8,000 tenants and 16,500 owners of rental apartments in the city of Salzgitter will receive mail from the city administration in the coming days.

The reason for this is a change in the law, according to which municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants are obliged to draw up a rent index.

To do this, the city needs information on the rented apartments, such as size, furnishings and rent levels, by January 2023. The aim is to conduct a complete survey of the approximately 25,000 rental apartments in the city of Salzgitter.

The simple rent index provides a scientifically validated, differentiated picture of existing rents in the city of Salzgitter: How high is the local comparative rent? What ranges are available in the different locations? This forms the basis for shaping local rents. As a neutral and free comparison tool for tenants, administrators and owners, it helps to avoid rental disputes.

The city of Salzgitter has commissioned the Hamburg-based institute Analyse & Konzepte immo.consult GmbH to compile the rent index. Participation in the survey is voluntary. All statutory data protection regulations are strictly adhered to during the survey.

Request for participation

Due to the great importance of the rent index, the city of Salzgitter is asking the people contacted to take part in the survey in large numbers. Anyone who receives a questionnaire should please complete it and return it to the commissioned institute - postage paid in the enclosed envelope or online.

"We are aware that citizens have already had to complete numerous questionnaires on the census, microcensus and property tax in recent months. This, and the fact that the data already submitted cannot be used, is understandably causing resentment among many of those affected," says Jan Erik Bohling, Head of Economic Affairs for the City of Salzgitter.

"The positive thing about the survey on the rent index is the great benefit for citizens. It allows local rents to be viewed and compared, and rent increases in existing tenancies can be avoided if possible. The rent index also provides support in setting the price for new rentals. Especially in the current times, when prices are rising sharply, citizens should take advantage of these benefits. It is therefore important that they participate in answering the questionnaire so that meaningful results can be achieved," explains Jan Erik Bohling.

Further information on the rent index and data protection can be found on the Salzgitter city website.

The results of the rent index can be downloaded free of charge from the City of Salzgitter's website at the beginning of next year.
