School transportation

From the 2024/25 school year, eligible pupils will receive their collective school season ticket (SSZK) as a chip card, which not only visually reflects the D-Ticket, but also has all of its functions: Travel on regional and local bus and rail services throughout Germany.

Description

Description

Based on the legal provisions of Section 114 of the Lower Saxony School Act (NSchG), the City of Salzgitter - as the responsible body for school transport - must transport children and pupils living in Salzgitter from their home to school and back under reasonable conditions or reimburse them or their legal guardians for the necessary expenses for the journey to school. On the basis of § 114 NSchG, the City of Salzgitter has made use of the option granted to it by the state legislature and has defined the type of transportation and the transportation conditions (e.g. the minimum distance) in the "Statutes on School Transportation in the City of Salzgitter" ("School Transportation Statutes").

A right to transportation or reimbursement of costs exists in principle only for the group of persons named in § 114 Para. 1 S. 2 NSchG, provided that the route to the nearest school corresponding to the type of school chosen by the pupil exceeds the minimum distance specified in the pupil transportation statutes.

Transportation is generally provided by local public transport (ÖPNV) and is regulated by issuing a collective student season ticket, which can be applied for at the responsible school. If transportation by ÖPNV is not possible, it will be provided by individual transport (rented vehicles or means of transport of the legal guardians), whereby the means of transport to be used is determined by the City of Salzgitter. If the City of Salzgitter has agreed to transportation by the legal guardians, the necessary expenses will be reimbursed to the extent specified in the school transportation statutes. Corresponding applications for reimbursement of the necessary expenses must be submitted by October 31 of each year for the previous school year.

In the 2018 financial year, the city of Salzgitter incurred expenses of around EUR 3.36 million for school transport.

Further provisions on school transport can be found in the school transport statutes in the "Downloads/Links" section. There you will also find an information sheet with answers to frequently asked questions about school transport and the relevant application form for the reimbursement of school transport costs.
