Traffic signs (abbreviated as VZ) and traffic control devices are used to regulate traffic. They are mandated by the authorities, and road users are responsible for complying with them. Traffic signs include traffic signs, road markings, traffic lights, and signals from traffic control posts. Traffic control devices include barriers, bollards, parking meters, parking ticket machines, railings, barriers, guidance systems, and flashing light and traffic light systems (“traffic lights”).

Any installation, modification, or removal of traffic signs or traffic control devices requires an order from the competent traffic authority.

According to the Road Traffic Regulations (StVO), traffic signs and traffic facilities can be divided into the following groups of traffic signs:

• Signs and instructions given by police officers (Section 36 StVO)
• Flashing traffic signals, steady-light traffic signals, and green arrows (Section 37 StVO)
• Blue flashing lights and yellow flashing lights (Section 38 of the StVO)
• Traffic signs (§ 39 StVO)
• Warning signs (§ 40 StVO)
• Regulatory signs (§ 41 StVO)
• Directional signs (Section 42 of the StVO)
• Traffic facilities (Section 43 of the StVO)
