Salzgitter's landscape is characterized in a special way by the forest:
There are 37 square kilometers of forest in the city area - that's 16.5 percent of the total city area.
The many functions of the forest are impressive - it

Of Salzgitter's forest areas, 52.8 hectares are owned by the city, including, for example
- the Hagenholz between SZ-Steterburg and SZ-Thiede,
- the "Jammertal" cemetery to the east of SZ-Lebenstedt,
- the forest south-east of the war cemetery in Hallendorfer Wald,
- the forest at the castle complex of the Burgberg south of SZ-Lichtenberg.
