Salzgitter

Forest and landscape

The use of the forest and the rest of the open landscape is regulated by the Lower Saxony Forest and Landscape Act (NWaldLG).

Salzgitter's landscape is characterized in a special way by the forest:

There are 37 square kilometers of forest in the city area - that's 16.5 percent of the total city area.

The many functions of the forest are impressive - it
it also serves as a

  • Habitat for wild animals and wild plants
  • Filters and stores rainwater
  • Protection against soil erosion
  • Air filter and climate improver
  • Recreation area for people
  • Production site for the raw material wood

Of Salzgitter's forest areas, 52.8 hectares are owned by the city, including, for example

  • the Hagenholz between SZ-Steterburg and SZ-Thiede,
  • the "Jammertal" cemetery to the east of SZ-Lebenstedt,
  • the forest south-east of the war cemetery in Hallendorfer Wald,
  • the forest at the castle complex of the Burgberg south of SZ-Lichtenberg.
