"30 km/h zones serve to calm traffic and protect all road users, regardless of whether they are walking, cycling or driving. However, this only works if they are clearly visible," says Klingebiel, who is responding to the many requests from the public and local councils for the ageing 30 markings on the carriageways to be replaced.
According to the SRB's surveys, there are a total of 405 roads throughout the city that are zone 30. Of these, 338 roads have Zone 30 signs and a further 67 roads also have 30 markings on the carriageway. The markings on the 67 roads concerned have become more or less worn over the years and are no longer visible throughout.
For 67 roads with markings at the beginning and end of the road, 134 markings are therefore necessary. The total cost of restoring the 30 markings is around 21,000 euros per year. The road concerned must be fully closed for this work. This process is repeated every two years, as the paint markings are usually worn off after this time.
From spring 2021, depending on the weather conditions, the SRB will gradually restore the "30" speed limit markings in the 30 km/h zones where they were in place. New "30" markings on roads that are already signposted will only be made if a special situation requires it.
