2026 Kommunalwahl: Absentee Voting Offices Open

Anyone who is unable to vote in person in the Kommunalwahl on Election Day, Sunday, September 13, 2026, can apply for an absentee ballot now.

The application can be submitted conveniently online using the form (opens in a new tab) on the City of Salzgitter’s website (opens in a new tab), by email to briefwahlbuerostadt.salzgitterde, or using the application form on the back of the voter notification.

It’s especially easy to apply using the QR code on the front of the election notification. After scanning it with a smartphone or tablet, the online form opens, already pre-filled with your personal information. All you need to do then is confirm that you agree to the privacy policy.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to request absentee ballot materials by phone.

When submitting an application, you must provide your last name, first name, date of birth, and address in Salzgitter. If you wish to have the absentee ballot materials sent to a different address, you must also provide that address.

The absentee ballot materials will then be mailed to you.

Eligible voters who are registered on the voter registry will receive a voter notification by August 23, 2026, at the latest. Citizens who have not received a notice to vote but believe they are eligible to vote must review the voter registry and, if necessary, submit a request to correct the voter registry if they wish to ensure that they can exercise their right to vote. The register will be available for inspection from August 24 through August 28 at the absentee voting office.

Applications for absentee voting may be submitted until Friday, September 11, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. However, starting Wednesday, September 9, the documents will be mailed at the voter’s own risk, as timely delivery by mail can no longer be guaranteed. In such cases, it is recommended that voters pick up their absentee ballot materials in person.

Voting at City Hall in Salzgitter-Lebenstedt and at the Salzgitter-Bad branch office

Mail Delivery Times

When voting by mail, you should allow sufficient time for mailing. In particular, when mailing absentee ballot materials abroad, you must take longer mailing times into account. The City of Salzgitter therefore recommends applying for an absentee ballot as early as possible.

The completed absentee ballot must be received by the office indicated on the ballot no later than 6:00 p.m. on Election Day, Sunday, September 13, 2026. It is not possible to submit the absentee ballot at a polling place. The eligible voter is personally responsible for ensuring timely receipt.

Powers of Attorney and Illness

Applying for and receiving absentee ballot materials on behalf of another person is only permitted with the appropriate power of attorney and for a maximum of four people. In the event of a sudden serious illness, the voter registration card and absentee ballot materials may, as an exception, still be requested and issued on Saturday, September 12, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., as well as on Election Sunday, September 13, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Salzgitter-Lebenstedt City Hall.

Polling places within the city limits will be open on Election Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
