Waterway supervision involves enforcing and monitoring necessary measures

• to improve the condition of water bodies as part of the natural ecosystem,
• to reduce the input of substances into water bodies,
• to eliminate water pollution, and
• to prevent potential future pollution.

The authority of the competent agency is defined in Sections 100 and 101 of the Water Resources Act (WHG) and in Section 128 of the Lower Saxony Water Act (NWG).
