Drinking water is a food product and is subject to particularly stringent safety requirements. Water supply systems are monitored by the public health department.

If you wish to operate a centralized or decentralized water supply system, a private water supply system (private well), or a building water supply system that provides drinking water to the public, you must notify your local public health department of:

• the installation
• commissioning and recommissioning
• structural or operational changes
• the transfer of ownership or right of use
• full or partial decommissioning

Similar requirements apply if you operate a mobile or temporary water supply system.

As the operator of a building water supply system, you must also register any non-potable water system operated in the same building. This does not apply to fire-fighting water and drinking water systems if you supply potable water to them.
