The grammar school encourages independent learning and science-oriented work. In accordance with their abilities and inclinations, the grammar school enables its pupils to focus on individual specializations and, depending on their qualifications, to continue their education at a university or in a vocational field.

Depending on the school's decision, lessons in years 5 to 10 consist of compulsory lessons and optional lessons or compulsory lessons, optional compulsory lessons and optional optional lessons. A second foreign language is compulsory from year 6 onwards. Special subject-related teaching focuses can be offered in years 8 to 10. Successful completion of year 10 entitles students to enter the qualification phase of the gymnasiale Oberstufe. The gymnasiale Oberstufe is divided into a one-year introductory phase and a two-year qualification phase, ending with the Abitur examination after thirteen school years. Teaching in the introductory phase is class-based and in the qualification phase is subject-based. The general higher education entrance qualification entitles students to study any course of study at a university, irrespective of any additional university admission procedures.

At the end of the qualification phase, the general higher education entrance qualification can be acquired through the Abitur examination. In the event of withdrawal (at the earliest at the end of the first year of the qualification phase) or failure to pass the Abitur examination, the school part of the Fachhochschulreife can be acquired, provided that the minimum requirements are met.

The objectives, content and methods for teaching at the Gymnasium are determined by subject-related core curricula and by standardized examination requirements for the subjects of the Abitur examination.
