Salzgitter

"Repository concept not viable"

The Salzgitter City Council was informed about the objection submitted by the City of Salzgitter as part of the National Waste Disposal Program (NaPro) at its meeting on Wednesday, 24 June.

Konrad shaft in Salzgitter.

It was prepared by a law firm from Hamburg. The objection was sent to the responsible Federal Ministry for the Environment in Berlin at the end of May. The alliance partners AG Schacht Konrad, IG Metall and Landvolk Braunschweiger Land have also received a copy.

There is also a current short expert report on the state of science and technology at the planned Schacht Konrad repository from the expert office Intac. One of the central statements of the report is "that an amendment to the planning approval decision would definitely be necessary for final storage in Konrad."

The report concludes that the storage capacity of Konrad is not sufficient for all low- and medium-level radioactive waste produced in the Federal Republic of Germany. Furthermore, Konrad is not suitable for all low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste.

According to the experts, this means that the final repository concept pursued by the Federal Government to date, which consists of Konrad and the final repository for heat-generating waste in particular, which is still to be found in accordance with the Site Selection Act, is not viable.

The corresponding submission with the statement and brief expert opinion can be viewed below in the Salzgitter citizens' information system.
